Pandemic Wellness: Staying Fit and Healthy During COVID-19

The current global pandemic that we are living in has affected many aspects of what used-to-be a normal way of life. COVID-19 has introduced new norms, and it’s safe to say that some of us are still seeking productive ways to adjust. Despite all the negativity surrounding this dangerous virus, the world slowing down could also actually be used to benefit us. Staying at home has allowed us to focus a bit more on ourselves.

It is essential to maintain good health, especially during a global pandemic. For many of us, staying home has led to procrastination, excessive laying around, and other harmful habits that could negatively influence both mental and physical wellness. Physical activity has always been positively associated with health and mental wellbeing. Therefore, it is a perfect way to escape all the Coronavirus-caused blues that we have been feeling for the past few months.

Physical Activity: The Solution to Almost All Problems

Adapting to global-pandemic-life can be difficult and many have seemed to struggle with it, including me. However, I found my relief in physical activity - from running my first-ever 10K, to hiking with my housemate, to cycling and doing yoga every morning. The truth is, I’m not the “runner-type”, so when I did take on the challenge, it was an absolutely horrible experience for me, but it felt good to get out of the house and achieve something.

It’s all about finding the balance and what you enjoy doing, so I’d recommend trying out different methods of physical activity - whether it’s going for a run, cycling, hiking, swimming, doing yoga, doing crunches and squats, lifting weights, playing a sport with friends, or even just walking your dog. Each of these is beneficial, and keeping your options open gives you the ability to choose which best suits you. Also, remember that social media can be a resource. Pinterest and YouTube are packed with ideas when it comes to physical activity inspirations and tips - so have a look!

Setting Goals

Setting and writing down your goals is a great way to remain inspired and motivated. Start small, like walking a mile a day, and write down your accomplishments and plans. Putting pen to paper has a way of helping to bring plans to reality. Athletes are often advised by sport psychologists to use SMART goals - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.

Using SMART goals to inspire yourself to pursue physical activities will lead to higher production in your every-day life.

Having a positive attitude is especially important during these times. Exercising and physical activity often result in feeling good and being positive, so if you’re ever experiencing the struggles of living amongst a global pandemic - take the time to write down a simple goal, and go for it. Sometimes, even just a long walk is all we need.
