In 2018, a landmark project entitled Panic! It's An Art's Emergency!  found that there was a significant dissonance between the kind of demographics who worked within the creative industries and the rest of society. Their game-changing report demonstrated that even now, there are deep institutional inequalities when it comes to people participating in the arts, culture and, by extension, journalism.

 

It's clear to see that so many people from all walks of life have so much to offer in the media industry, but it can feel like the system is designed against them. Free Reign has been designed as a response to this institutional inequality, as we strive to give opportunities to new and training journalists from diverse backgrounds to develop their craft.

In short, Free Reign is a creative platform for people to share their work and discuss experiences that they wouldn’t usually be able to in the mainstream media. It is an inclusive space for all and reaches out to those who may not fit in the typical ‘norms’ of the industry.

 

The media industry is hard for us all to get our foot through the door in, never mind in a global health crisis! So this is a way we can get our work out there. It does what it says on the tin, Free Reign is a platform for creatives from all walks of life, their voices will be heard.
